Support Group for Parents (Attention and Executive Functioning)

By Faye Friedman, M.S., CCC-SLP, SHEMESH Director

Peek into the room and you’ll find a very diverse group of parents from all parts of Northwest Baltimore.  Most of the parents who attend have young children or tweens/teens with ADD.  For most of our members, the support group represents an opportunity to share frustrations, ideas, challenges and successes with other parents who really “get it”.  It is not unusual for us to pass around a box of tissues or to give someone a hug.  At the same time, we work on celebrating our children’s strengths and achievements.  Our children are smart, creative, energetic and interesting!  Here is what one parent said about the meetings:  “Even though it’s so hard to get out and I literally have to drag myself there, I never regret going.  I always feel liked I gained something!”

Another parent said,  “I am always interested in hearing about how ADHD will look as my child gets older. For example, anticipating his future needs and how best to support him.”

CHADD is a national organization that support Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Disorder.  SHEMESH hosts and facilitates their Northwest Chapter meetings.  We meet on the first Wednesday of every month at the Park Heights JCC in the second floor Board Room at 8:00 pm.  For more information contact rsvp@shemeshbaltimore.org  or call (410) 843-7524.
